CROMWELL CROWN
1658
Courtesy of Carl Norton
1658 Silver, 14.8 grams, 33mm Diameter.
Designed by Thomas Simon.

Obverse portrait of Cromwell as an Emperor with wreath.
Reverse shield of the protectorate.

In 1738 new dies were made by John Tanner, the chief
engraver of the Royal Mint and some coins were struck from
them. These are known as the "Tanner Copies".

There are also imitation often called "Dutch Copies" on these
the N in ANG upside-down.

The originals can be identified by the 8 over 7 in the date, and
most have a die brake running right from the O in OLIVARD.

Cromwell Crown 1658
Dutch Copy
As you can see on the Dutch Copy the N in ANG upside-down,
but more obvious is the fact that on the Dutch copy the wreath
points to the N (like the original Cromwell Half Crowns), where
as on the original the wreath points to the A in ANG.
