GEORGE II GUINEA 1727-1760 |
There are eight different obverses and five different reverses issued for the half guinea of the George II reign. There was a lot of forgery and gold clipping taking place. This coupled with the aging of the king and the common use of the guinea meant that the design was often changed and updated. It was issued in almost every year from 1727 to 1760. The first four obverse was by John Croker. Obverses five to seven were by John Tanner. The first reverse was by Johann R. Ochs senior. Reverses two to four were by either Croker or Tanner. Reverse five was by Johann R. Ochs junior. Some coins have E.I.C. below the bust, they were struck using gold from the East India Company. Some coins of 1745 have LIMA below the bust. These were made using silver captured from the Spanish by Admiral George Anson in June 1743. 1727-1760 Gold 8.4 grams, 25mm Diameter. |
