GEORGE III GUINEA

George III Guinea
1761
There are six different obverses and three different reverses
issued for the half guinea of the George III reign.

It was issued in almost every year from 1762 to 1813.

The first three obverses were by Richard Yeo.

Thomas Pingo was the designer of the forth obverse.

Lewis Pingo (Thomas's son) was the designer of the fith and
sixth obverses.

The first reverse was the same as the reverse used in the
George II half Guine by John Tanner.

The second reverse often refered to as the "spade" reverse
on account of the shape of the shield was by Lewis Pingo.

The third garter reverse was also by Lewis Pingo, and it is
also known as the "military" guinea. It was only issued in
1813 and was struck to be used abroad by Wellingtons army
during the Peninsular War. Gold was the only method of
payment accepted by the locals.
