The British sovereign is one of the worlds most popular and recognised gold coin. The obverse of the half sovereign is by Bertram Mackennal. The George and dragon reverse is a modified version of Benedetto Pistrucci's design. The sovereign was also issued for use in Australia (Melbourne, Perth and Sydney), and has a small M, P, or S mintmark and South Africa (Pretoria) which has a small SA mintmark. The mintmarks on the ground above the date on the George and dragon reverses. Proofs exist for 1911, 1911(M), 1914(S), 1923(SA) and 1926(S). 1911-1932 Gold, 8 grams, 22mm Diameter. |
