George VI, born on the 14th of December 1895, was the second eldest son of
King George V and became King upon abdication of his elder brother Edward
VIII on December 11th 1936.
George VI was the last Emperor of India and the last King of Ireland.
During George VI's reign wars were fought on all fronts of the Empire, including
Germany, Italy and Japan. The British Empire was also to break up and
become the Commonwealth.
George V suffered a series of health problems and was a heavy smoker, which
in turn lead to lung cancer and his death in 1952 aged just 56.
