William III Half Crown 1696
(Obverse 1, Reverse 1)
Roses and Plumes,
Elephant & Castle
Position of Local Mint Marks
There is only one obverse and three different reverses issued
for the half crowns of William III reign.

Some 1701 dated half crowns however have different issue
marks in angles on the reverses.
Roses in angles - silver from West of England mines
Elephant and castle below bust - silver from the Africa
Company.

Due to the "Great Recoinage" during William III reign,
hammered silver coins were to be withdrawn and replaced with
milled coins instead. A lot of the coins were minted at local
mints until 1698 to produce the large quantities required.
They have letters below the bust: B= Bristol, C=Chester,
E= Exeter, N= Norwich & Y= York.
