There is only one obverse and three different reverses issued for the half crowns of William III reign. Some 1701 dated half crowns however have different issue marks in angles on the reverses. Roses in angles - silver from West of England mines Elephant and castle below bust - silver from the Africa Company. Due to the "Great Recoinage" during William III reign, hammered silver coins were to be withdrawn and replaced with milled coins instead. A lot of the coins were minted at local mints until 1698 to produce the large quantities required. They have letters below the bust: B= Bristol, C=Chester, E= Exeter, N= Norwich & Y= York. |
