The 1831 sovereign was issued in a plain edged proof format. The regular issue began in 1834. The 1834 half sovereigns have an 18mm diameter. The diameter of the 1835,1836 and 1837 coins were enlarged to the more traditional 19mm. The bust was designed by William Wyon, and the new wreath reverse was designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen.
